GB Writer’s Workshop Tip post

     For all the Great Books students who didn’t attend this evenings session in the Bible building, you missed out on a lot of useful tips. However, I would like to share with you one of the tips that stuck with me about essays and papers.
     Dr. Fullman gave a majority of the explanation for the information presented, and he had many great points and tips. What stuck with me and I believe will help me the most is what he said about timing of when to be done writing an essay or research paper. The example was, if the paper is due on Saturday, when should you complete your rough draft by? Well, Friday is what I thought. Wrong. It should be completed by Wednesday afternoon or evening. He went on the elaborate not to work on it on Thursday because you need to have a fresh mind to edit and rethink is this a good essay or a great one. So, Friday you should complete the final draft and then reread it and then submit it. That way if there are technical problems, you still have Saturday not to panic and to resolve the issue of submitting your paper. So the big point is, don’t procrastinate until Saturday afternoon to write your paper.

Jealous Gods

Mommy why can't I go to the sleep over, and why does Joe get new clothes and I can’t have any? We have all gone through times of jealousy, likewise, so did the gods in Virgil’s'  The Aeneid . It is obvious that some of them don't like each other. The Queen of the Gods, Juno, was enraged because she lost a beauty contest with Venus. As a result, the war was wagged against the Trojan's, but why did the queen feel she was more beautiful than Venus? In book one, we are posed with the question, why was there a war and what caused it? Well the short answer is Juno was angry with Venus like two girls would be, if one was liked better by a boy than the other. But, “What could wound the Queen of the Gods with all her power?” (1.10). Thinking about the quote and the question it poses could reveal perhaps that the gods are flawed, but each in their own unique way. The Great Game of Escape

How often do we hear of people becoming drunks after a bad relationship, losing a job, or after some other type of conflict with another party? We quite often hear about people diverting to alcohol as a form of escape. But, why do people revert to alcohol to divert their pain instead of facing it head-on? In Civilization and Its Discontents, Freud proposes that suffering is a sensation that occurs in the highest degree among relationships between men and they utilize drunkenness as the greatest way to rid themselves of a sense of unhappiness.  So, what is the end goal of man’s life? Freud states that people “seek happiness, they want to become happy and remain so. There are two sides to this striving… [to eliminate] pain and discomfort” (Freud 15).
